Density
- Density is mass per unit volume.
- Density has the symbol p and units of kg m-3.
That is kilogram per cubic meter (kg/m3) or as it is often quoted, gram per cubic centimeter (g/cc, g/cm3 or g cm-3)
- Since @ 4oC, 1 ml of water weighs exactly 1 gram, the density of solutions are often quoted in g/ml.
- Relative density (specific gravity) is the density relative to pure water.
Water has a fixed, absolute density of 1000kg/m3 @ 4oC and 1 atmosphere (ATM) of pressure.
At 4oC, water is at its most dense state.
If it seems a coincidence that water, at 1 ATM and at its most dense state, happens to have such a exact density is because it is what was used to define density units in the SI system
