Water dissociation constant (K w)
- Kw represents the dissociation constant for water.
- It is similar to the acid dissociation constant (Ka).
- Water (H2O) partially dissociates into hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-) in
equal concentrations of 10 - 7M.
H2O < = > H+ + OH-
The extent of this dissociation, at equilibrium, is represented by the water dissociation constant (Kw) -
Kw = ---------------……………(divided by)
[H2O]………………..(the molar concentration (M) of the undisociated form)
= ..… ------------------ ….M …… (water has a one molar concentration by definition)
Therefore, Kw equals 10 - 14
