• pH is one measure of acidity.
  
  
• pH indicates the concentration of free hydrogen ions (H ⁺) present in a solution.
  
  
• The pH scale ranges from 0 - 14. (more extreme values do lie outside this range)

  1 - is very acid (concentrated orthophosphoric acid solution- H₄PO₄)
  
  7 - is neutral (pure water - H₂O)
  
  14 - is very basic (concentrated sodium hydroxide solution- NaOH)
  
  ie The lower the pH value the higher the free hydrogen ion concentration ([H ⁺]) (see pH Scale)
